Overview:
Global telecommunications leader Orange bridged digital skill gaps by partnering with Coursera to establish the Orange Digital Centers (ODC) network. Orange Digital Centers are free and inclusive resources dedicated to delivering digital innovation and training to all. These centers support local start-ups and projects using digital technology, aiming to develop digital and professional skills in their communities. By combining the reach and resources of Orange Digital Centers with Coursera's extensive online learning platform, Orange has created a powerful initiative to address digital inequality and skills shortages in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
The Challenge:
Providing high-quality education to all ODC members
Orange, in line with its commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and its purpose of giving "everyone the keys to a responsible digital world," recognized several major challenges in developing digital and professional skills in the MEA region. Like many organizations operating in developing regions, Orange faced the challenge of connecting young people and professionals with advanced digital and professional skill sets. The company identified a significant skills mismatch, with many young people and professionals lacking the necessary skills to meet the demands of the current job market, particularly in technology and digital fields.
Access to quality education and training varied across the region, with some areas facing challenges due to limited infrastructure and resources. Certain groups, including women, individuals with disabilities, and those in rural or economically disadvantaged areas, often encountered additional barriers to educational opportunities. Additionally, the nature of distance learning presented challenges in maintaining learner engagement, which could impact its effectiveness.
The Solution:
Enhancing skills and improving employability with ODC-Coursera
In response to these challenges, Orange launched the ODC-Coursera program in March 2024 to complement its Orange Digital Centers initiative. The program aimed to offer certified training from leading companies and universities, enhancing the skills of ODC members and improving their employability in key areas such as entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, data engineering, and IoT development. This initiative aimed to democratize access to quality education and promote equitable distribution of resources while providing continuous and personalized support to enhance learners' chances of success.
The Results:
Enhancing the skills of more than 1,800 employees
ODC’s program has shown promising results within the Orange Digital Centers in the MEA region. In its first six months, more than 1,865 people enhanced their skills in critical fields such as cybersecurity, project management, and digital development. More than 1,738 Professional Certificates and 36 Specializations have been successfully completed, demonstrating the learners' dedication to professional growth.Â
In this short period, the program achieved a 75% utilization rate of available licenses, indicating strong engagement from participants. The initiative has also supported the ODC Club network, establishing branches in various regions and partner universities.
